Antony Price, Famed for Styling David Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary style architect responsible for a series of unforgettable images favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and performative fashion, such as the pastel suits that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
His passing follows shortly after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Lasting Legacy
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included a number of outfits for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
