Our team is checking images and video shared earlier today that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he succumbed to his wounds. A probe is under way.
The initial step to check the location of where the pictures were from relied on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building captured in the footage.
Locating other structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the footage were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
