Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting
No fewer than 16 individuals perished and over 40 were wounded when assailants shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have called a act of terrorism.
As of the newest reports, authorities have stated the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 injured people were admitted to medical facilities.
The deceased have not yet been officially identified, but police believe their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the individuals who have been identified at this time.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Described as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She described the events leading up to the attack, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Publicly, a senior official expressed that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was also killed in the incident, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with several in critical condition. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.
A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
