Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”
It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”
NYPD issued security footage Monday of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack is currently under review and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt were reported.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning in the area between Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The assailant escaped.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a baby.
“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.
He joined the Jets as a new signing in March and was anticipated to become an important component of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on August 2 and was carted from the field.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he attends every game. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
