NY Launches Online Platform for Residents to Report Immigration Videos After Detentions of Four American Citizens

The state attorney general has rolled out a new online portal encouraging residents to provide images and footage of ICE operations throughout the state. This move comes just a shortly after a significant immigration operation rattled Manhattan's Chinatown, triggering mass outcry.

US Citizens Held In Enforcement Action

A lawmaker revealed during a news conference that four US citizens were detained and detained for "almost a full day" following the previous day's operation. Demonstrations broke out in NYC on consecutive evenings.

"Each citizen deserves to reside free from terror," the attorney general declared in a release.

"For those who saw and recorded immigration enforcement during the raid, I urge you to provide that footage with my office. We are dedicated to reviewing these accounts and evaluating any legal breaches."

Portal Features

The platform offers spaces to submit images and video footage of the operation, plus a section to note geographic details. When submitting, submitters must check a checkbox that confirms that "the attorney general could utilize any materials, images, or footage in a legal proceeding, including in a legal proceeding or government document."

Details of the ICE Action

The Chinatown raid, which onlookers say involved over fifty ICE personnel, occurred in a famous area of the city where fake handbags, accessories, jewelry and other goods are commonly traded en masse – typically to sightseers.

Recordings of Tuesday's raid reveal multiple hooded and equipped officers securing and holding a man, and shoving away witnesses. Crowds of residents followed the personnel along the roads. An military-style transport was noticed moving along the urban roads.

Leadership Statements

During a midweek briefing featuring the immigrant advocacy group, the congressman, a Democrat, said that four nationals were taken by federal agents for about 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where US citizens should be detained for unjustly." He noted the citizens were freed on the following day with no legal action taken.

"There's a clear purpose here. It is not to take criminals off the street," Goldman said. "This constitutes a armed campaign to incite tension. It is simply a justification to provoke conflict for federal officials to bring in the military to halt conflict that they initiated."

Extensive Outcry

Outrage over the immigration operation quickly spread – each of the political contenders criticized the raid, including Governor Kathy Hochul.

"Repeatedly, the federal government opts for authoritarian theatrics that instill panic, not safety. It must stop," one mayoral candidate wrote.

NYC immigrant rights groups spoke out also.

"ICE descended on Manhattan's Chinatown with armored transports, covered personnel and riot gear to go after small merchants trying to make a living. This operation had no connection to community security and was entirely about intimidating residents and communities," stated the head of a major immigrant coalition.

Official Guidelines

Agency rules forbids the holding of citizens and the agency has said it does not apprehend American nationals. Yet, investigative journalism has revealed that over 170 American nationals have been taken illegally by federal agents since the start of the present government.

Current Situation

ICE raids have been rising in frequency in the state and around the country recently.

An October operation in midtown Manhattan was the initial documented operation on an refuge facility of the current administration. Rallies targeting federal operations are widespread including claims of force and cruel conditions.

Recently, a document submitted by advocacy organizations alleged medical neglect of women with child in detention centers.
