The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel launched a completely new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. At a time often characterized by dark humor, this show's sincerity struck a chord and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."

A President's Endorsement

The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat style.

"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about watching this charming family go about their simple existence.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to evolve comedy past its prevailing sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

What Comes Next

Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well help usher in that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to enjoy the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
