The Three Lions to Start the European Championship 2028 Campaign at the Etihad Stadium
England’s men’s team will commence their 2028 European Championship journey at the the home of Manchester City, on the condition that they attain the relatively straightforward entry for a championship taking place in the bulk of Britain and the Irish Republic.
The Etihad Stadium has not welcomed an English men’s fixture since eight years ago, when Turkey were defeated 2-1 in a exhibition match, but is almost certain to welcome the national team for their first match on June 10, 2028.
England are planned to play their concluding group fixtures at the national stadium, but, in the event of winning the preliminary round, their round of 16 match would be held at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Finishing second would mean beginning the elimination stage at Everton’s ground.
Championship Launch and Protest
The event was launched at an event in central London on Wednesday evening. Senior figures from Uefa and the organizing bodies were heckled as they arrived the location by approximately 50 protesters, who called for Israel’s national side to be expelled from global football because of the situation in Gaza.
Signs were held up with phrases reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters called out: “Kick Israel out.”
Championship Schedule
The first match of Euro 2028 will be held at the Principality Stadium in the Welsh capital, on a Friday in June 2028, a fixture that will feature Wales if they make it.
The national stadium will host both semi-finals and the final, which will be staged on Sunday 9 July with a kick-off time at 5:00 PM.
It is hoped that an earlier start, which will also be implemented for UEFA Champions League finals from next season, will cater to families and help reach a broader range of audiences.
Host Nations
The Irish team are due to play their initial fixture at the Dublin stadium and the Scottish team would do the same at the national stadium of Scotland.
All four host countries’ teams will take part in the preliminary stage; two reserved places will be held in reserve for any that do not reach the finals through the standard process.
Stadiums and Elimination Phase
The Birmingham venue and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium finalize the event’s nine venues. Each one will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the last eight held at every host’s main arena.
The draw for the qualifiers will be conducted in the Northern Irish capital, which was excluded as a venue city last year when it was revealed the Belfast stadium could not be redeveloped in time, on a date in late 2026.
Leadership Comment
“The event will be a competition for the supporters and a festival of everything we value about the football – its fervor and ability to bring people together.”
More than three million admissions, a unprecedented number for a UEFA European Championship, are anticipated to be made available to supporters.
