New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate in his election bid.

An Iconic Home

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the mayoral home for most New York City mayors after the World War II era.

However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core policy, hesitated to declare this decision right away following his triumph in November.

"My choice came down to keeping my family safe and the imperative to directing all of my focus on enacting the affordability agenda the city's residents supported," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, a district famous for its diverse immigrant communities and global cuisine.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, Astoria will forever remain a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he added.

Campaign Controversy

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.

But his opponents, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing although he hails from a prominent family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his three terms, which ended in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a place for public city functions, and advocated for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience an environment far removed from his modest Astoria apartment.

Adorned in cream-colored walls, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.

Internally, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished to reflect the home's historical period.

The compound, which is said to has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter what people claim," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, which means the city regulates on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.

New Yorkers see such units as valuable lifelines as the housing expenses outpaces the means of many residents.

Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
